My remembrances of the Big Meeting are as a boy you know, the Big Meeting for us then was a great affair in Durham and the band I remember hearing the band gathering its strength together at the crack of dawn marching around the village getting around and then getting to Durham and as many a folk as possible would go into Durham. 6 0' clock, 7 0' clock in the morning to watch them. So for us the Big Meeting, we remember seeing of course hordes of men listening to political speeches and people getting excited, but for us it was the roundabouts and shows and coconut stalls that was the important thing for us, that was the Big Meeting for us and everybody was there, you met people from other parts of the county, relatives that you hadn't seen for years you know. Course Durham was crammed with people, crammed - eeh, yes. All the shops were, the shops used to board up their windows with wood you know in case they were pushed in, there were so many people, everybody went.
