Other farm experiences – haymaking, snow, false teeth. Moved to Henshaw, made friends, learned to read. Brief on various recollections of school; oak apple day, friends with “wild” boy. Aspects of war – blackout, meeting soldiers. Water from well. Dolls and games, accident, books. First film seen at cinema. Return to Low Fell and to school, initially scared of going. Beige dress. Some lessons. Christmas presents. Air raid shelters and air raids. Food rationing, first sight of an orange. Listening to radio shows. Some teachers and classes. Food at Fenwicks cafe. Going to the opera-operetta. Times tables. Scholarship exam – preparing, taking. In school play. Elocution and piano lessons, poetry recitals. Sundays – church, Sunday school, tea with friend. Family involvement in choirs.
