Smelt mill flue
The ruins of part of the "New C.B. Smelt Mill" near Langthwaite, Arkengarthdale. A reverberatory hearth was housed under the wide stone-arched hood. (There were six such furnaces!) This mill was considered to be the most modern in the country at the time of its building in 1824. (See The Lead Smelting-mills of the Yorkshire Dales by Robert T Clough.)
