Witherite Mine

Witherite Mine

A view of the witherite mine operated by the owners of Settlingstones Mines Limited. The witherite traverses strata of Lower Carboniferous Age and forms part of an old lead mining field which ceased galena production in 1873. The vein which runs approx. north-east to south-west and is intersected by faults and in the westerly part carries witherite in place of galena. The mine ceased work in 1969, together with its associated preparation plant. Most of the buildings are modern though a 19th century square-built stone chimney still stands, which originally served as steam plant for a generator. (See Handbook on Witherite and its industrial uses.)
