At the Clay Cross Collieries, where the celebrated CXC Gold Medal Coal is worked, the ponies - the illustration is a typical example - are well cared for and receive very humane treatment. The bridle worn by the pony was adopted to protect the animal's eyes and head in places where there is a danger of its coming into contact with the low roof".
