Eliza Brown
Eliza Brown (nee Jameson), born in Howden le Wear, Crook on 1st of March 1898. She was the youngest of 13 children. Her parents were Emma and Michael Henry Jameson. He was a miner at Annfield Plain. Eliza started work in a public house when she left school at 14. When the war started in 1914 she became a postwoman (see photo 35952) and held this job until 1918. She married George Brown a few month later and lived in Stanley. Her husband was a miner and member of the Mines Rescue Team. During the 2nd World War he was a member of the Home Guard. Christmas Card sent home from Stalag 383 Prisoner of War Camp, 1943, by Sgt Jack Douglas to his family at 6 Blooms Avenue, West Stanley. These letter cards were issued once a month one per POW and there was a sergeant who was a pretty good artist and for a fee of ten cigarettes, he would transform your letter card into a Christmas Card, Birthday Card etc. See 79809 for colour.

Caravan
Caravan built and owned by "Pompy" Hall (standing in front) with his nephew in law, Geordie Davenport standing in the doorway. "Pompy" and his mother lived in this caravan at Stanley from 1926 until the Council "abolished" them in the 1930s.

Forestry Camp
Hamsterley Forestry Camp, c1925. Man on right is David Douglas of 7 Tweed Terrace, West Stanley. in those days all men on the "dole" had to go and work for six weeks on forestry planting. They received a free pair of corduroy trousers, a shirt and pocket money. If they refused to go, their dole was stopped.

Mr John and Mrs Rhoda (nee Pinkney) Hollingworth, taken at 6 Co-operative Street, West Stanley, c1937. He served as a regular soldier with the Northumberland Fusiliers before being married. Their son John was killed in Aden whole serving in the SAS in the 1960s.

Boy on tricycle
Mr Taylor Hall, aged 4 years riding a tricycle at the rear of 48 Avon Road, South Stanley. When he left school he was apprenticed to Mr Murray, jeweller, of Beamish Street, Stanley. He later opened his own jewellers shop on Royal Road, Stanley and for may years kept the pet shop in Station Road Market Hall.

Mr Matthew Hall and his wife Betty (nee Chambers of South Stanley) with their son Taylor. Matthew Hall started to work for West Stanley Co-op Store in Stanley when he left school and eventually became lorry driver bringing goods from the Co-op Depot at Stowell Street, Newcastle. His older brother Dode was blacksmith for West Stanley Co-op, his blacksmith shop was situated just beside the railway bridge leading to South Stanley.

Wedding photograph of Mr Hogg and Miss Gladis Bambridge of Blooms Avenue, Stanley. Mr Hogg came from Burnhope and Miss Bambridge worked in Lang's sweet shop on Beamish Street, Stanley. When Mr Lang retired, his shop was taken over by Mr Muncaster as a barbers shop. The Muncaster family used to live at Oakey's Cottages.
