“ Gateshead 10(2) waits alongside McKinney's newspaper shop at Low Fell terminus. On the left three cars are heading south towards Chester-le-Street, Durham, or perhaps even further, because this is part of the Great North Road from Edinburgh to London. Behind the cars, there has been a tram shelter on the corner since steam tram days. Photo by W A Camwell on Monday 1st August 1938 ”

“ This loco is on station pilot duty, the main purpose of which being to wait in a siding near Durham North signal box & assist stopping passenger trains out of platform 4 & over the viaduct by pushing at the rear of the train. Other station pilot duties included picking up a box van, open wagon and guards van from the loco shed area and delivering water and coal to signal boxes situated on the remote branch lines. “ J Frame was the toast of South Shields, he scored the only points of the whole game, a try then worth 3 points, to see his side take the Cup against West Hartlepool on Ashbrooke, Sunderland, in front of a crowd of 10,000. Shields had a remarkable run to the Final overcoming, Ryton, Hartlepool Rovers and then Tudhoe whilst West Hartlepool had overcome equally tough opposition in Stockton, Sunderland, and the Durham City to make it to Ashbrooke. ”

“ This County Junior Cup win marked the remarkable rise of YMCA as they went on to achieve County Senior Club status and join the fledgling Rugby League. Alec Smith scored the only try of the day converted by Baty for a 5 – 0 win against favourites West Hartlepool West End at Durham. Their route to the Final saw them account for Greatham, West Hartlepool Christ Church Inst and then Tyne Dock in the semis. ”

“ This was a red-letter day for the South Shields club, they defeated West Hartlepool 6 – 0 on the Brewery Field, Spennymoor, the home of Tudhoe RFC., with tries from Archer and Deakin in front of a crowd of 5000 which included 1500 from Shields. As Durham Cup holders, they were then invited to join the Northern Rugby Union (now Rugby League). They accepted from June 1901; but they did not last long with the new organisation, being voted out in 1904. ”
