Durham Miners Gala
Durham Miners Gala, 26th July 1952. Mr Sam Watson (1898-1967) feeling the heat at 1pm. He was born at Donkin's Row, Boldon Colliery. At the age of 14 he started working in the mines. His first official post was secretary of Boldon Independent Labour Party in 1927; in 1936 he became agent for the DMA. He was awarded the CBE in 1946 and an honorary degree by the University of Durham in 1955. He was known to many as'Mr Big Neeting' for the work he did in promoting the Gala. (Used in Michael Richardsons Memory Lane book "The Durham Miners Gala", p127 top right.)
