Watermill
Originally a flax mill and later a corn mill, the mill is practically complete - one pair of stones driven by counter gear. 1993 - now converted to flats, but the machinery remains. The race was in a tunnel under the road. As a flax mill, it was built by Thomas Porthouse who, with John Kendrew, first invented flax spinning machinery. A print of the mill is in the "Victoria County History of Durham". Listed Grade II.

Waste Heat Ovens at Ottovale
The first battery of waste heat ovens to be built in County Durham at Winlaton. Belonged to Priestman's Collieries, but now closed and demolished.

Coal Washeries
One of the earliest coal washeries in West Durham at Roddymoor, which consisted of feldspar jig boxes. Remains of Dixon beehive coke ovens in the foreground.

George Short
George Short born 1872 died 1960 - started work underground at Kimblesworth in 1884. Photograph taken on Vesting Day, Sunday 14th May 1947 at the pithead of the Garesfield Bute Pit, High Spen. He had been a member of DMA and Miners Per Relief Fund and still working as shifter. He said " I am working regular for to help Shinwell, I have never worked out of the County of Durham and have worked 51 years at Garesfield Pit, High Spen and still hope to help in production". He is carrying a carbide lamp.
