Freight line guards van
A specially designed guards van for freightliners. The van was placed on top of the last trailer of the train and the guard sat inside it. However the guard was subject to a great deal of discomfort through the movement of the train, and only after a matter of weeks the "new" guards vans were discontinued. Originally it had been intended that freightliners would run without guards van but union action meant that this was impossible, hence the development of the van in the first instance

Jimmy Tracey, a well known character in South Shields Market Place prior to 1st World War. 3'4" high he was well know in "Union Flag" public house in Thrift Street, where a chair was heightened for him to reach the bar. He died in the Harton Institution.
