Bow Lane

Taken from book 'Pen and Ink Sketches in the Streets of Durham' by Fred W Morgan, first published June 1886, but reprinted with comments by G R Batho and M F Richardson in 1993. Comments: Bow Lane was formerly called Kingsgate and that name was used for Ove Arup's bridge which now spans the Wear from Bow Lane to new Elvet. The houses on the left were demolished c1961. At the bottom of Bow Lane stood a tower which was part of the city's defences.

Dun Cow Lane

Comments: The lane is named after a panel depicting the Dun Cow which is situated on the North West turret of the Chapel of Nine Altars of the Cathedral. Originally called Lyegate or Lykegate, this was the lane along which bodies were carried for burial.
