He started his pit career aged 10 when he went to work 11 hour shifts at Sherburn House Colliery. After several other pits he finished of at Chopwell Colliery. His son John has just retired as chexkweighman at Chopwell.

Mr Oliver Hopkins of 53 Musgrave Gardens, Durham City, with the original model of the 'Griffin' whch was made for King George V, 31 years ago by Mr F Minto of London, 1st June 1953. The Griffin originally stood on a turret on St George's Chapel Windsor. It was used as part of Mr Hopkins coronation decorations. DA Box 655.
