Diving Championship
Charmain Welsh of Thornley, Durham's 16 year old Olympic diver, a member of Durham ASC, April 1954. DA Box 751. She is pictured with the other seven contestants who were competing for the Women's one-metre National Springboard Diving Championship that was beign held at the City Baths. This was the first international event staged at Durham. She retained her title by a comfortable margin.

Trainee nurses
Group of trainee nurses outside 'The Towers', The Avenue, Durham City, June 1954. This was the former home of Dr F F T Hare and wasbought by the hospital authorities to provide a preliminary training centre for nurses. The sister tutor was Mrs E Gascoigne who was in charge of the school with Miss M dinghole-Smith of Dryburn Hospital. DA Box 770. Water pollution
A sign erected near Kepier 'halves', Durham City warning people that the river was polluted, March 1957. Concern over the state of the river had been raised by university lecturer, Dr K R Ashby, zoologist, who had put forward a four point plan of action for cleaning up the River Wear, against the proposed plan of spending £7m on the Derwent Valley Reservoir. On the right are the targets belonging to Kepier Rifle Range. DA Box 89.
