The first flower and vegetable show, of driver and HQ staff of Durham Ambulance Service, Framwellgate Moor, September 1956. Stretchers were used as show benches. The judges were W Bromley and J Wilson of Brandon Colliery. Dean of Canterbury
The Dean of Canterbury, Dr Hewiett Johnson was giving a lecture on China and at 8 minutes to nine, student pallbearers entered the Appleby Lecture Theatre (Durham University) with an imitation coffin, draped in black with the Hungarian flag overlaid, 13th November 1956. They laid it in front of the guest speaker and paid tribute to the Hungarian people. This was part of a demonstration students made when the 'Red Dean' visited to speak to Durham Colleges UNSA & Social Society. The final of the Durham Hospital Cup (founded 1910) at Ferens Park, Durham City, April 1957. Mackays carpet factory beat Ushaw Moor 5-1 (four goals in the last 15 min), this was the first time Mackays had won the trophy. The game was watched by 900 spectators. DA Box 99.

Royal Observer Corp
A presentation of a long service medal to housewife, Mrs Eda Warner, of Merryoaks, after 12 years service with the Observer Corps as Chief Woman Observer, May 1957. Capt W R Wilkinson came from York to make the presentation. She joined in 1943 and apart from the two years when the entire coprs was disbanded, she had been a member of the Durham group operations room. DA Box 103.

Durham's football match against Tranmere Rovers, 2nd stage of the FA Cup tie at Ferens Park Footbal Stadium, Durham City, 7th December 1957. The record attendance was 7000, even the Bishop of jarrow turned up with his daughter. The last time the clubs had met was 7th January 1928 at Birkenhead, when Tranmere beat Durham 11-1. DA Box 173.

Opening of Playing Field
Cllr Mrs E Robson, pictured with Mr George Brown, Clerk to the Parish Council, opening the King George V Memorial Playing Field at Framwellgate Moor, 22nd March 1958. The site was once a disused pit heap that had been purchased from Durham County Council for £120. The playing fields cost £8300 of which £2150 was from the King George V Memorial Fund. DA Box 206.
