Durham Miners Gala, 26th July 1952. Aneurin Bevan (1897-1960) recognises a friend (on the right is Hugh Dalton). Bevan was one of 13 children and he began work in the South-East Wales coalfield at the age of 13. In the 1926 General Strike he led the Welsh miners. He had spent his working life at Ushaw Moor Colliery where he served fellow miners as check-weighman and compensation secretary. In January 1946 he was elected financial secretary of the DMA.
