Air Raid Siren
Air Raid Siren - Specifications: Elmatic B29741. STD 71/9,1kw, 230/50, made by Castles Castings Ltd, Brook Works, Clitheroe, Lancashire established circa 1950. The siren was originally from Washington Urban District Council, which later became Sunderland City Council. It was probably fitted as part of the post-war Civil Defence scheme. Height 440mm x Length: 580mm. Diameter of ends: 400mm.

Laundry Van
This laundry van was built in 1910 by Harpers of Sunderland for the Grange Laundry which operated about 4 vans in South Shields and 18 in Sunderland. It was used in South Shields until the beginning of WW11 when the fleet was replaced by battery vans but continued in use there for some time due to the shortage of powered vehicles during the war. Size 1.8m (wide) x 2.5m (high) x 3.2m (long). Wheel diameter 830mm.

Warden Law Engine
The cylinder from the Warden Law Hauling Engine. The engine is cast iron and was used for pulling coal wagons from Hetton Colliery up the gradient at Warden Law. They then went down four self-acting inclines to loading staiths at Sunderland. The engine was built in 1836 by Murray’s of Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. It was dismantled in June 1962. Prints and plans of the original brick house for the engine are in the files, as are prints and plans of the engine itself.
