Members of the Durham Central League, they were formed in 1931. Their best season was 1934/35 when they won the League, Deerness Valley Aged Miners Cup and Brandon Nursing Cup and 1935/36, in which season they were winners of the Durham County Amateur Cup, and the Brandon Nursing Cup and were runners-up in the Sacriston Cup. Ironstone miners
Group of miners at Normanby Ironstone mine, c1900. The man fifth from the right sitting has iron tags on strings around his neck, each tag bore a mans number and they were attached to full tubs of ironstone to indicate who had won the load. A small powder magazine in Cleveland. Before the 1872 Mines Regulation Act miners looked after their own powder, under the bed or some other unlikely place. More responsible mine owners built a central storage magazine long before the Mines Act made it compulsory. Memorial Institute fire
General view of the Memorial Institute at Sacriston following the extensive fire of 15th December 1961. The Institute opened on the 29th September 1923 and was dedicated as a memorial to commemorate the servicemen who served and died in the 'Great War' of 1914-18. It was part of the Miners Welfare system, the ground floor was a Billiard Hall, Reading Rooms and a Library, the Upper Floor was the local Cinema. After 1967 it became a local Council Community Centre.
