Iron Mine
Large number of workmen throwing gorse bushes, straww etc into a hole that appeared on the seaward side of the second sea wall (built 1890-95). This hole gave the sea direct access to the mine, it was thought that the rate of water rushing into the mine would overwhelm the Cornish pumps and entirely flood the mine causing its total loss. The hole appeared on the sea shore outside the sea wall aat about high tide on the night of Wednesday 18th May 1898 at about 1am.
