Durham Miners Gala, 25th July 1936 - Mr Clement Attlee MP (1883-1967) addresses the crowd from No 2 platform. He had been elected to succeed George Lansbury as Labour leader on 8th October 1935. He openly condemned the means test and said the country needs a strong socialist government that would deal with the causes of poverty and sweep away means test legislation and give to the miners a standard of life based on what the country can afford to all its citizens.
