Parliamentary Elections
Mr C F Grey MP, after his election, seen on the balcony of Durham Town Hall, 24th February 1950. Mr Grey entered Parliament in 1945 as member for the division. He was born in 1904 and worked for more than 20 years as a coal hewer at Elemore Colliery, he was a native of Easington Lane where he attended the local elementary school. Mr Grey was a miners lodge official before 1945 and an Independent Methodist preacher. DA Box 286.

Easington Disaster
Mr Sam Watson(l) and Mr E H D Skinner, representing the Durham Miners Association and the National Coal Board carrying wreaths into Durham Cathedral for the Memorial Service for those killed in the Easington Colliery Disaster, July 1951. DA Box 441. 83 men lost their lives in the disaster and over 4000 people attended the memorial service.

Father and son reflect, July 1953. DA Box 670. Mr James Gilliland, aged 93 was the oldest member of the Durham Miners Association. He started his pit career aged 10 when he went to work 11 hour shifts at Sherburn House Colliery. After several other pits he finished of at Chopwell Colliery. His son John has just retired as chexkweighman at Chopwell.
