Front of DMA miners banner for Shildon Lodge, c1890. A very old allegorical picture with much concealed symbolism - Druid and ancient man, in front of Stonehenge pointing to a triangle with Latin motto. See 27276 for back. Hastings Colliery
General view of New Hartley Hastings Colliery. This mine was sunk in 1877 by the Seaton Delaval Collieries Co. and replaced the ill fated Hester Pit with its Hastings (coal) shaft & Melton (up cast) shaft's mining in the Hartley Area passes back over 300 years starting with old Hartley (Seaton Sluice) which in 1760 had steam powered pumping 1763 by winding a Newcomen engine. Believed to by first in country for coal. Old Hartley flooded in 1845 led to the sinking of the doomed Hester Pit, Hastings mine ceased working in 1959 by the NCB

Ashington Colliery
General view of Ashington Colliery. Mining began on this site around 1849 then known as Felham Down. The Ashington Coal Co., followed and in 1867 they sank the Bothal Shaft. This followed by Carl 1873 Duke 1887 in all six hafts at one time. Finally the Bothal Drift sunk by the NCB in 1956. Once the premier colliery of the Coalfield Ashington survives to this day on a much smaller scale. At its peak the mine employed more than 5,000 men producing over 6,000 tons a day. Closed finally in Spring 1988.
