“ Miners were the authors of their own misfortune. Despite having no mandate to strike – (there was no ballot) – they still followed Scargill like sheep. Scargill didn’t give a monkeys about the pits – he only wanted to make a name for himself by trying to be the biggest union leader to bring down a Tory Government. After 25 years of misery the miners deserve what they got. ”

I was always a socialist until the strike, when I went to the first meeting to decide if we were going out on strike, and the union bully boys on stage said " we don't need a vote, do we 'cause we're all out on strike" and I had the strange idea that the ones who were losing the wages decided, not the paid lackeys, who still went out boozing and had holidays in cuba. Yes Thatcher was wrong, but Scargill helped destroy the communities. ”

“ BLO55 - Just found this part of the Beamish Site. When the strike started I was in Hobart House, the NCB's London HQ's working on the noise deafness case research for the union's lawyers. The atmosphere in there as the strike started was poisonous. Remember many of the senior officials had family working in the pits - many of them supported the strike but they weren't called out themselves and no one from the staff unions like COSA & BACMs seemed to try to get them to support the strike especially in the early days.

Mind I did enjoy seeing the industrial relations staff runnin... ”

“ This was a red-letter day for the South Shields club, they defeated West Hartlepool 6 – 0 on the Brewery Field, Spennymoor, the home of Tudhoe RFC., with tries from Archer and Deakin in front of a crowd of 5000 which included 1500 from Shields. As Durham Cup holders, they were then invited to join the Northern Rugby Union (now Rugby League). They accepted from June 1901; but they did not last long with the new organisation, being voted out in 1904. ”
