Wooden knitting sheath belonged to Mr & Mrs Waugh, 7, Stanley Homes, Cramlington. He was a coal miner at Hartley Main Pits, Cramlington. 30 mm long x 147.5 mm long x 17.5 mm wide. Short piece, well notched and with a carved out wooden chamber containing wooden ball. Voluted end. Well used. Engraved " GB. 1838 MWW ".

Knitting sheath c1850. Scimitar shaped with stem separating 'blade' and 'guard'. The front is chip-carved with triangles, squares, etc. There is a small glass window on the guard, which reveals paper with Jane Robinson Egglestone written on it.

The end of the needle holder is of brass. It is of light coloured hardwood in good condition. Jane Robinson was the great grandmother of donor whose mother was born in 1877. Presented by Mrs. M. E. Mason, Barnard Castle.

Knitting sheath. Second half of 19th century. Knitting sheath or "pin", scimitar shaped with flattened needle holder. Front of sheath decorated with chip carving, in circles, diamonds, etc. Brass tip to holder. Length 235mm. Used by donor's mother, who died in 1918, aged 74, to knit stockings for her 8 sons and 4 daughters.

Knitting sheath. Mid 19th century. 15 mm high x 217.5 mm long x 47.5 mm wide. Scimitar shaped sheath with elaborately turned needle holder. This has a tooth edged, white-metal cap, showing some wear in the hole. On the top of the " blade " is a decoration in bone inlaid, and fixed by brass tacks N.B. also cross hatchings at the toe of the " blade ". Recatalogued, previous number not located.
