Railway Station
General view of Sherburn House station, c1914. In 1914 nine west-bound and eight east-bound trains were using the station daily, with an additional east-bound train on Saturday afternoons. The station closed for passenger traffic at the same time as Durham Elvet in 1931. An exception was made for the Miners Gala Specials and this privilege continued until 1953.

The factory of Quakers Sauce Co, drysalters, stood at Ellis Leazes, Gilesgate. To the left is Mr Lockerbie, a blacksmith from Gilesgate, and on the right Mr Fred Elliott, a driver from the company.

Decorated horse and cart owned by Fowlers the grocers of 100 Claypath, Durham City, c1927. This was an entrant in the Durham City Horse Parade, taken outside the Barracks (Vane Tempest Hall). Fowler's were established in the 1850s. The man holding the horse is Jack Pickering from Paradise Lane and the young lad dressed like a clown is Tom Pattison. The building in the background is part of the old gatehouse to the Barracks. This area is now a housing development called St Giles Close.

This was an entrant in the Durham City Horse Parade, taken outside the Colpitts Hotel on Cross Street (now incorporated into Hawthorn Terrace), which was named after the man who opened it, John Colpitts.

The cart was painted by Harrison's Coach Builders, Sunderland Road, Durham City. In the background is the former Wood and Watson's 'Pop' factory (demolished and now part of St Giles Close).

Durham City Horse Parade
Durham City Horse parade travelling down Gilesgate Bank, c1910. The parade started at the Barracks (Vane Tempest Hall) and travelled through the city and then back to the barracks to be judged. This was an annual event (first one held 1896, re-started 1903, and after a gap, revived 1910), which involved many people and businesses in the city and surrounding villages. The streets were lined with spectators for the show and money was collected for local charities (mainly the County Hospital).
