Major General C L Loewen CD GOC 50th Division inspecting men of the 8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) outside the old Drill Hall at the bottom of Gilesgate Bank, prior to the arrival of Mr E Shinwell, Minister of War, March 1948. The Minister was touring the northern command to encourage staff officers in the drive for expansion of the TA. Officers present were Lieutenant Col G L Wood DSO MC and Captain P F Greenwell MC. Walking Race
A walking race from Coxhoe to Durham City, 6 February 1949. DA Box 162. The two competitors were Walter Salisbury and Jack Simpson. Simpson achieved nearly 2 miles head start as he moved off from the Hare & Greyhounds at Bowburn. Salisbury, seen here in New Elvet, who was more experienced, won by five minutes.

Fire crews from Durham County Fire Brigade on parade at The Sands, Durham City, 23 May 1949. Twenty six stations from the county took part and over 200 personnel assembled for the visit of HM Inspector of Fire Services, Mr P P Booth. Bee Keeping Display
Durham City & District Bee Keeping Associations exhibit, which gained a cup at the County Press & Houghall Show, September 1949. Houghall Show began in the 1930s during the depression when thousands of miners were out of work, it was first held at Dryburn. After the Second World War the Durham County Press established there own shown in the town hall; the first joint show was held in 1948. DA Box 239.
