Portrait of Lady Mayor
To mark the advent of women into Durham City Council, citizens started a public subscription for a portrait of the first lady Mayor, Cllr Hannah Harrison Rushford, April 1951. Mr T W Pattison, a well known Newcastle artist, carried out the commission. DA Box 414.

Old Contemptibles banner
The laying up ceremony at Durham Cathedral of the banner of the Durham City Branch of the Old Contemptible, 29 April 1951. The banner, which as dedicated in 1934 by the Dean of Durham, was handed over at the start of evensong to Dean Alington who said, "Most gladly I receive the banner into the custody of the cathedral", it was however recently found discarded, but now hangs proudly in the Heritage Centre, North Bailey, Durham City. The daughter of the Chief Constable A A Muir, Alison Margaret, aged 19 months at their front gate on Potters Bank, Durham City, April 1951. There was a sign on the gate stating "Please shut this gate child loose". DA Box 413. Good infants costume.

Festival of Youth
The County Festival of Youth, more than 5000 people attended at Hollow Drift, 2nd June 1951. There were numerous demonstrations and displays, 87 organisations took part. In the background is the water tower and signal box for Durham Elvet Station. DA Box 428.

The unveiling of the new stained glass window in Durham Town Hall by the Colonel of the Regiment Brigadier I A Churchill, November 1951. It commemorated the honour bestowed on the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) in 1944 to march through the streets of the City with bayonets fixed , colours flying and bands playing. DA Box 480.
