Roofing accident
Roofers, Edwin Thomas (aged 29) of High Street, Carrville (right) and James Glaister (aged 18) of Millburngate, had a lucky escape when the roof they were working on in The College (Durham City) collapsed, sending 40 tons of limestone slates crashing to the ground, 7 January 1952. It was the home of Mrs M J Burton, widow of the late George Burton, Head Verger. DA Box 492.

The cobbled streets of 'Durham City' echoed to the sound of marching when the County bade farewell to the 1st Battalion Durham Light Infantry, 20th July 1952. They were to sail for Korea at the end of July. They are shown on their way to a special farewell service at Durham Cathedral after which a book of remembrance was dedicated containing the names of 3000 men of the regiment who gave their lives in WWII. Father and son reflect, July 1953. DA Box 670. Mr James Gilliland, aged 93 was the oldest member of the Durham Miners Association. He started his pit career aged 10 when he went to work 11 hour shifts at Sherburn House Colliery. After several other pits he finished of at Chopwell Colliery. His son John has just retired as chexkweighman at Chopwell.
