NER class 398 steam locomotive no 749. Location unidentified.Withdrawn pre 1923 grouping. Loco must have just run round its train to shunt it from the rear, because its headlamp is next to the brake van (an old Shildon type).

A selection of lamp and manriding tokens/tallies in brass and zinc. Some of the tokens are from Lambton 'D' Pit. The others are stamped with the letters SH which is possibly South Hetton Colliery. The average size of the tokens is 40mm in diameter

Miners Patterson Lamp used in West Sanley Diaster
They previously belonged to Allan and Henry Miller, father and son, both killed in the West Stanley Disaster of 1909. The lamps were brought out of the pit. Lamp No :- 509, a later Patterson type. Burner missing. Made from brass and painted steel. Base marked with number:"509".
The bonnet is also marked "509" (stamped on to a brass plate). See file for details of family tree. There is a bent steel hook for hanging the lamp and a steel spike (80mm long) is attached to it. Miners Safety Lamp Jonh Mills No1
Safety Maker :- John Mills & Sons, Newcastle upon Tyne. Height: 235mm x Diameter at base: 85mm. Brass plate on the front which gives details of maker and lamp type. This is a No. 1 type lamp. It would be locked by a lead plug lock but the plug is missing. The lamp is made of brass, copper, with a steel bonnet.
