“ The buildings in the background are the caretaker's house furthest to the right, and to the left Stanhope Road Infants'School which I attended 1963-1965. The lake was later filled in and bungalows and flats for OAPs built on it. The flats subsided and were demolished in the 1970s. My nana lived in an upstairs one, and the slope was so bad shehad to put wedges under her settee to stop it moving across the floor ”

General view
General view of East Castle, known originally as Bantling Castle. The village took its name from the nearby lime kilns which resembled castles, built for the Stanhope and Tyne Railway Co. The name Bantling was supposedly due to the small stature of the miners who came to work at one of the pits in the village. Most of the village was demolished in 1957 leaving only a few railway houses and the lime kilns.
