Slag tipping
Tipping of molten slag from the Millom Ironworks on to the rear of the new sea wall (built 1900-05). The dumping of slag here had a number of useful benefits to both the Hodbarrow Mining Co and Millom Ironworks, amongst these benefits were that it strengthened the sea wall, it also filled in a large area of sunken ground at the rear of the sea wall caused by mining subsidence.

Hodbarrow iron ore mine, showing 70 inch Cornish engine built by Williams Perran Foundry Co in 1878. The engine (70 inch cyliner) had a 10 foot stroke inside the engine house but only 9 foot stroke in the shaft. This engine was originally installed in a red brick engine house on the Annie Lowther Shaft (70 fathoms) but was moved to a new purpose built red brick engine house in 1910 to allow ore to be extracted from the area under the engine house.
