Sub overman
"The deputy - there are no deputy's now - sub-overmen instead; very much the same as a deputy, but they don't do as much for the men. Underground at Brancepeth Pit
Brancepeth `A' Pit, X-Cut South Flat. Face workers observe 2 minutes silence, January 28th 1936, for Jack Nicholson who had recently been killed (see 11707 for fall that killed him). Sent by Mrs L. Wrightman, who says: "My father, Mr William Elliott, was a deputy at this pit - he is sawing a pit prop. The gentleman beside the pony is Mr George Gallege who was backoverman, to the other side is the later Mr Joe Alker another deputy. (All of these men are now dead?) Behind the boy in the centre is William Bowman."

Prize winning pony called Spider at Hetton Moorhouse Farm, Easington, c1936. Pony sired by a pit pony and won 1st prize at Durham County Show. Earl of Strathmore wanted to buy him, but owners wouldn't sell. He lived until he was 36 years and won many prizes

Breaking Pit Ponies
Two ponies in limber gear without skullcap bridles, to an unusual pit pony breaking cart, for a pair. Ponies have full tails, so not yet working. Coal tub behind with flangeless wheels for training. Taylor's Wood was a Consett Iron Co. pit pony farm.

Small privately worked shaft on Cockfield Fell in the 1930's. See also others in series. Headstock is primitive. 3? telegraph poles as a set of shear legs. Winding is by primitive horse-gin powered by a pit pony in limber gears. The drum is a single horizontally mounted pulley wheel.
