Cross Roads
General view of Sacriston cross roads, c1926. Lloyds Bank is on the extreme left, theses premises were built in 1911 when the bank moved up from a small former newsagents premises on lower Front Street, the small branch was opened in 1905 and the cash payments were taken by pony and trap to the main branch in Chester le Street. The Queen's Head Hotel is on the extreme right.

Staffordshire Rows are clearly shown above and below the Memorial Institute (1997 now the Community Centre) - built to house an influx of Staffordshire men brought in to work in the local colliery, they were demolished in the early 1940s. Left foreground is the Sacriston Branch of Chester le Street Co-operative Society.

General view of the Sacriston Branch of Chester le Street Co-operative Society, c1911. This branch opened c1908. Only the hardware department remained when the store moved to 8 Front Street c1977. The hardware business only continued for a few more years before finally closing. Gus Carter, bookmaker took over the premises.

Daisy Hill branch Co-op
General view of the Daisy Hill Branch of Chester le Street Co-operative Society, c1911. This branch opened October 1876. The whole block of premises and a large amount of stock was destroyed by fire on 6 June 1920. The total damage to the property and stock was about £40,000. A new building was quickly erected. Drapery and hardware departments closed in 1967. The store ceased trading when the grocery department closed down in 1968. The building was demolished in the early 1970s.

Edward and Eleanor Shaw
Portrait of Edward and Eleanor Shaw (nee Barrass), married on the 15th April 1888 in Chester le Street Registry Office. Edward was a coalminer and had a reputation locally of being very strong. They had 10 children, 7 of whom survived. Edward and Eleanor were parents of Harry Barrass Shaw, father of Thomas Hewison Shaw, whose son was Ian Hewison Shaw.
