Durham's football match against Tranmere Rovers, 2nd stage of the FA Cup tie at Ferens Park Footbal Stadium, Durham City, 7th December 1957. The record attendance was 7000, even the Bishop of jarrow turned up with his daughter. The last time the clubs had met was 7th January 1928 at Birkenhead, when Tranmere beat Durham 11-1. DA Box 173.

Opening of Playing Field
Cllr Mrs E Robson, pictured with Mr George Brown, Clerk to the Parish Council, opening the King George V Memorial Playing Field at Framwellgate Moor, 22nd March 1958. The site was once a disused pit heap that had been purchased from Durham County Council for £120. The playing fields cost £8300 of which £2150 was from the King George V Memorial Fund. DA Box 206.

One of the white peacocks in the courtyard of Brancepeth Castle, which was then the Headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry, May 1958. The peacocks were under the personal charge of an NCO especially detailed to look after them. DA Box 217.

The three oldest past students of St Hilds College, Durham City, attending the reunion at the college's centenary celebrations, may 1958. Royal visit
The first visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra to the regiment since being appointed by the Queen as Colonel in Chief, 17th May 1958. She was taking part in the Regiments bi-centenary celebrations. Durham Market Place was crowded to watch her take the salute at the march past of the entire regiment including 220 of the old comrades and representatives from the army cadet forces of the county. Durham City Senior School, Whinney Hill, Durham City, June 1958, showing the girls entrance. The school was opened by Brig Gen Sir Conyers Surtees KT, 15th September 1932. The architect was the city engineer, Mr J W Green. The tall chimney belongs to the prison boiler house.. DA Box 229.

The Roman Catholic Churches of Durham held their Garden Fete in the grounds of St Leonards School, June 1958. The Mayor Cllr J A Naylor had a go at the shooting gallery after he opened the fair, behind the children, wearing glasses is Cllr W Edge. DA Box 234.

Young Farmers Rally
The Young Farmers Club County Rally at Houghall, 21st June 1958. Lads of the Federation had the 'Tossing of the Sheaf' competition to themselves, until Durham farmers daughter Joy Kingston came a long to stake a calim for the lassies. Over 3000 visitors attended their 17th annual rally.DA Box 236.
