Mrs C Bowers of Greenfield Terrace, Sacriston was believed to be the only woman Caller (knocker upper or craikman) in the mining districts of England, February 1938. Every morning at 1 o'clock she would leaver her warm bed to call the miners up to go to work on the fore-shift. Her dog was called Jack. She first started the job as a wartime occupation during 1914-18 War. DA Box 231.
