“ Hi, Ernest Tait Turnbull was my grandfather. I understand that the shop was near Shield Row rail bridge. Family history is that he went bankrupt and had to close the shop through giving credit to mining families during the 1926 strike. Best Regards, Alan Turnbull. ”

“ The roof support known as a six leg hydraulic chock was made by a few companies in the 60s Dowty Mining, Gullick Dobson and FSW (Fletcher Sutcliff & Wild), today the modern two leg roof support is known as a Shield.
The AFC (Armoured Flexible Conveyor) pan section was known as the Panzer (because of armour plate used on tanks) is 5ft long and conveyed the cut coal off the face. ”

“ I was only young and didn’t live in a mining area but I remember seeing the rows of police, and the picket lines, on the television. It was one of the first bits of news I really noticed, I didn’t understand it. I know my father was very worried. I think it might have been that year that he told us we weren’t allowed to mention Maggie Thatcher during our holiday, because he wanted to relax! ”

“ BLO55 - Just found this part of the Beamish Site. When the strike started I was in Hobart House, the NCB's London HQ's working on the noise deafness case research for the union's lawyers. The atmosphere in there as the strike started was poisonous. Remember many of the senior officials had family working in the pits - many of them supported the strike but they weren't called out themselves and no one from the staff unions like COSA & BACMs seemed to try to get them to support the strike especially in the early days.
Mind I did enjoy seeing the industrial relations staff runnin... ”
