Miners
Group of miners with their safety lamps at Etherley Rush Pit, 1897. This was the deepest of the Etherley Coal Company's Pits, originally sunk to the Harvey Seam in 1869 at a depth of 288 feet it was later deepened to 453 feet and worked five seams; it obviously had water problems since the pumping shaft was 573 feet deep. Coal from this pit went overland to just south of the Etherley to Bishop Auckland road then underground until it was north of the Witton Park to Escomb road; the final stage was overland to cross the NER to the George Pit coke ovens. This pit closed in December 1917.
