Annie Swinbank (nee Metcalfe)
Portrait of Annie Elizabeth Swinbank (nee Metcalfe), 1905. Born 1882, died July 1973. Eldest daughter of Thomas & Mary Anne Metcalfe of Rutherford Farm, Scargill. They moved to Castle Farm, Scargill when aged two. Schooling at Scargill School which was used as a Methodist Chapel on Sundays. School teacher was Miss Goldsbrough. She walked to the opening of Bowes Museum when a small girl. Christmas treat was tea aropund the christmas tree at Lady Milbanks, Baringham Hall also sports in the summer for the children from Scargill School. Lady Milbank gave the girls sewing lessons at school.

(See 45892 for colour) - "Swimming down the Barrington Burn that was normally at school in the summer time the lads at the school would say, we're building a dam the night. They would dam the river up which, was only a stream really, but dammed it would be about 3ft 6 inches or something deep and they would swim there, no costumes nothing and a fire to get dried and that was the summer occupation."

Mrs Jennie Liddle
Portrait of Mrs Jennie Liddle, original owner of butter scales, stamped weights and clothes now in Beamish Collection. The following details were written by her great grand-daughter, Eileen Shaw. "John Liddle and his wife, Jennie, lived at Lower Garth, Witton le Wear during the latter part of the 19th and early part of this century. My mother was her grand-daughter and lived with her after her mother died when she was four years old. They were a gentle couple, and my mother had a happy childhood in Witton le Wear. She tells me that Jennie Liddle was the prize-winning buttermaker of the village...
