Motor Cycle Club
Members of the newly formed Durham City Motor Cycle Club, gathered outside the city for the start of their first road trial, September 1959. Mr Bob Fletcher (holding the cup), of the Volunteer Arms public house, Gilesgate, donated a silver cup for the occasion, he started them on their 125 mile journey. Ian Carr of Spennymoor and his navigator, John Robinson of Sacriston won the Fletcher Cup. DA Box 374.

A cat rescue from the River Wear in Durham City, 26th November 1959. After a one hour operation Sub Officer Reg James and Fire Officer Anthony Temple brought the cat to safety. Waiting at the riverside was Miss Gwen Wilkinson, secretary of the local RSPCA, who put 'Ginger' into a shopping bag and took it home for a meal and a dry-out. DA Box 405.

Bishop of Durham
Everybody is 'pet' to Yatty Johnston, including Dr M H Harland, the Bishop of Durham, who accepted Yatty's advice when he as 'cracked out' by Jim English to a game of dominoes at Craghead British Legion Club, June 1960. This was the first game the Bishop had played, so he did well (thanks to Yatt) to be beaten by two spots. Dr Harland visited the club during his tour of Craghead. DA Box 509.

Variety Theatre
Durham Town Hall was tranformed into a variety theatre, where star turns from the city and district gave a show, January 1960. One turn was The Sapphire Harmony Group: l-r: Billy Cole, Frank Gill, George Kell and Kenny Morgan. DA Box 425.

Bus Depot
Durham bus depot's £80,000 extension, Waddington Street, January 1960. The work was carried out by a local firm, R E Coleman, Western Hill, further service pits were installed containing heating appliances and fluorescent lighting. DA Box 432.

Student Rag
The 'paddle waht you like' race during Durham Universtity Student Rag Week, Febaruary 1960. The first prize was a barrel of beer, which was won by the Grey College Crew. Funds raised that year for the World Refugee Fund were £4,690 13s 11d. DA Box 446.

A six ton GPO supply wagon on its side after it crashed into a store yard used by the City Council in Providence Row, Durham City, February 1960. It was making a delivery to the Telephone Exchange. DA Box 452.

Crematorium
The new crematorium, South Road, March 1960. Inspiration for the whole design was drawn from Durham buildings it was designed by Mr Chaplin and cost £60,000. He chose the octagonal shape, as it was a feature of the cities ancient architecture, such as the castle keep and monks kitchen. The columns were rounded Norman style and made of local Dunhouse stone. DA Box 461.
