Vice-Lieutenant of teh County, Brigadier L H McRoberts inspects Special Constables from Durham at the first review for 6 years of Durham County Constabulary, 8th May 1960. In the group are the Mayor, Sir James Duff; the Chief Constable, Mr A A Muir and Mr W Blenkin, Commandant of the County Special Constables. After inspection the specials attended evensong where the Bishop of Durham Dr Maurice Harland preached. DA Box 488.

Consectration of Standard
The consecration of the 607 Squadron Standard, 22nd May 1960. Two former 1914-18 War Royal Flying Corp pilots, Durham's 'flying bishop' Dr Maurice Harland and the Mayor Sir James Duff were among the squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force at the palace Green ceremony. Dean J H S Wild consecrated the standard before being laid up in the Cathedral. DA Box 499.

Helicopter
A helicopter of the Queens flight, arriving at Durham Technical College for a test takeoff in preparation fo the Duke of Edinburgh's visit to the college on 24th June, photographed on 17th May 1960. The Duke was to arrive by train at 10am and leave by helicopter for Darlington at 12.15pm DA Box 491.

Royal Visit
A visit to Durham Technical College by teh Duke of Edinburgh, 29th June 1960. He had come to visit a cross section of youthful achievements in connection with his Award scheme. He spent more than an hour touring 36 yout organisations from the County on display; he also presented over 100 awards to young people taking part in his award scheme. He is pictured at the Police Cadet display. DA Box 515.

Gulbenkan Museum
The Gulbenkan Museum for Art & Archaeology of the Far East, 28th May 1960. The Earl of Scarborough, Chancellor of Durham University formally opened it. Part of the School of Oriental Studies, it cost £60,000 to build and was made available to the general public. DA Box 501.

Durham County Cadet Force Centenary Parade, Old Elvet, Durham City, 19th June 1960. Major-General K Bayley the County Commanadant took the salute when over 1000 officers and youths marched past after a service in the Cathedral, where Dean Wild preached. DA Box 511.

An embarrassed driverof a Spillers flour wagon, explains his mishap to a passing policeman, outside the Shakespeare Inn, Saddler Street, Durham City, July 1960. The wagonload of flour had broken the trapdoor to the cellar when driving over it. DA Box 533.

Miss Gwen Wilkinson of South Street, Durham City, October 1960. The daughter and granddaughter of Northern clergymen, she was born at Hebburn on Tyne and came to Durham about 1940 and lived with an aunt at Grafton House, South Street. She was Hon Sec of Durham Branch of teh RSPCA and was involved with many voluntary bodies as well as the Observer Corp. DA Box 570.
