Comments: This view shows a lost part of the city which stood below St Margaret's Church at the junction of South Street and Crossgate. The name Curtain in this case simply means encircling wall. The sketch was made at a time when this area was a notorious slum (see John Spear's Sanitary Report of 18th October 1881).

Comments: An interesting view looking down Millburngate. The cottages on the right were sixteenth century and, despite public controversy, were demolished in 1934. The Barley Sheaf Inn was 122 Millburngate and the landlord was J Shaw. The chimney to the left of the Barley Sheaf is probably that of Blagdons leather works.

Comments: This view shows the spire of St Nicholas Church in the centre. This area was known as the Horse Hole. There was a ford here which led to Walkergate on the opposite side of the river.

Comments: Elvet Tithe Barn in Hallgarth Street was originally built for the collection of tithes from tenants of the Dean and Chapter. The building is mid 15th century and a fine example. It was threatened with demolition as late as 1972; it is now part of the Prison Officers Club.

The Old Gaol, Saddler Street

Comments: This 13th century bastion can still be seen through a doorway situated above the University bookshop. it was part of a defensive gate with portcullis. It became the County Gaol when it was rebuilt in 1417 and was dismantled in 1820, owing to problems with coaches travelling to and from the Bailey.

Comments: It was here at 34 New Elvet that James Seyburn first started his carriage works in the city. He commenced business in 1885; by 1889 his business had outgrown the premises and he moved to 57/58 New Elvet. Elvet Riverside now stands on the site shown in this sketch.

Comments: The small building on the left situated above the pier, which dates from the 13th century was formerly the 13th century chapel of St Andrew. In the great flood of 1771 four of the central arches of the bridge were swept away.
