The houses had gardens, flower gardens mostly at the front and at the back they also had big vegetable gardens. Every place had a fair amount of land. That was because they grew stuff to eat...

It was very similar to the miners cottages you've got at Beamish with an open range, a round oven at one side and a set pot at the other that heated the water you needed. I can remember my father used to come in a get bathed in front of the fire."
