Von Ribbentrop had been the guest of the new Mayor Lord Londonderry and later attended a civic service at Durham Cathedral where both the British and German national anthems were played by the cathedral organist, Mr Conrad Eden. L-r: Mr T C Dugdale (the artist), Dr Pemberton, the Marquis of Londonderry (Chancellor of the University) who unveiled the portrait, the Bishop of Durham (Dr Hensley Henson). Dr John Stapylton Grey Pemberton was former High Sheriff for the County Palatine of Durham and lived at Belmont Hall (now Ramside Hall Hotel), he was also president of the Council of Durham Colleges, the Pemberton Lecture Rooms, Palace Green were named after him.
