Miss Gwen Wilkinson of South Street, Durham City, October 1960. The daughter and granddaughter of Northern clergymen, she was born at Hebburn on Tyne and came to Durham about 1940 and lived with an aunt at Grafton House, South Street. She was Hon Sec of Durham Branch of teh RSPCA and was involved with many voluntary bodies as well as the Observer Corp. DA Box 570.

Mr Stanley Rankin of Cedar Drive, Farewell Hall, Durham City, a keen bird fancier in his aviary, which contained more than 100 foreign birds from 28 countries, November 1960. In his first three shows he won over 20 prizes. DA Box 584.

Priest
Father Meagher in the study in St Cuthbert's RC Presbytery, January 1961. Father William Ignatius Meagher had been the parish priest at St Cuthbert's for 36 years, coming to Durham in 1924 and was due to delebrate his golden jubilee as a priest. He went to North Shields as a curate after being ordained, he was then priest-in-charge at Lanchester for a shirt time befre he joined the navy as a chaplin in 1915. He was on HMS Britannia when it was torpedoed in the Atlantic. DA Box 604.

Aeroplane
Mr A Schama with the fuselage of his single seater turbulent aeroplane. Austrian born Mr Schama, a skating instructor at Durham Ice Rink, had made the plane for less than £100, January 1961. During the 1920s he was a pioneer of glding in Vienna. He had more than 60 flying hours ot his name in this country. DA Box 605.

Ruins after a blaze at Old Durham gardens, a cottage belonging to Alan Bruce a 21 year old student, his 19 year old wife and 18 month old daughter went up in flames and with it £800 worth of uninsured property, 21st January 1961. DA Box 615.
