Illustration of Durham Cathedral and Fulling Mill, 1886. Taken from book 'Pen and Ink Sketches in the Streets of Durham' by Fred W Morgan, first published June 1886, but reprinted with comments by G R Batho and M F Richardson in 1993. Comments: The famous view of Durham Cathedral from the SW. It was this view that inspired Sir Walter Scott in 1816 to write the following - Grey towers of Durham, yet well I love thy mixed and massive piles, half church of God, half castle 'gainst the Scot, and long to roam these venerable aisles with records of deeds long since forgot. These words can be seen in...

The Curtain, South Street
Illustration of The Curtain, South Street, 1886. Taken from book 'Pen and Ink Sketches in the Streets of Durham' by Fred W Morgan, first published June 1886, but reprinted with comments by G R Batho and M F Richardson in 1993. Comments: This view shows a lost part of the city which stood below St Margaret's Church at the junction of South Street and Crossgate. The name Curtain in this case simply means encircling wall. The sketch was made at a time when this area was a notorious slum (see John Spear's Sanitary Report of 18th October 1881).

Looking Down Millburngate
Illustration of Looking down Millburngate, 1886. Taken from book 'Pen and Ink Sketches in the Streets of Durham' by Fred W Morgan, first published June 1886, but reprinted with comments by G R Batho and M F Richardson in 1993. Comments: An interesting view looking down Millburngate. The cottages on the right were sixteenth century and, despite public controversy, were demolished in 1934. The Barley Sheaf Inn was 122 Millburngate and the landlord was J Shaw. The chimney to the left of the Barley Sheaf is probably that of Blagdons leather works.

The Horse Hole, Millburngate
Illustration of The Horse Hole, Millburngate, 1886. Taken from book 'Pen and Ink Sketches in the Streets of Durham' by Fred W Morgan, first published June 1886, but reprinted with comments by G R Batho and M F Richardson in 1993. Comments: This view shows the spire of St Nicholas Church in the centre. This area was known as the Horse Hole. There was a ford here which led to Walkergate on the opposite side of the river.
