Opening of Dene to public
Family group in Castle Eden Dene on the occasion of its opening to the public, 24th June 1954, it was officially opened by Councillor J Ainsley. The Dene had previously belonged to the Burdon family, Rowland Burdon last of the line died in 1944, the footpaths and bridges then fell into disrepair until bought by Peterlee Development Corporation under a compulsory Purchase Order in 1950. Eden Colliery
General view of Eden Colliery, Leadgate. This Colliery was situated beside the Newcastle/Consett Road, beside the railway line near the Jolly Drovers pub. There was a 2nd shaft at Stony Heap below East Castle. Over the years the working moved and eventually the entire Colliery moved to Stony Heap taking the name `Eden' with it. The buildings shown hero were then demolished.
