Witherite Mine
A view of the witherite mine operated by the owners of Settlingstones Mines Limited. The witherite traverses strata of Lower Carboniferous Age and forms part of an old lead mining field which ceased galena production in 1873. The vein which runs approx. north-east to south-west and is intersected by faults and in the westerly part carries witherite in place of galena. The mine ceased work in 1969, together with its associated preparation plant. Most of the buildings are modern though a 19th century square-built stone chimney still stands, which originally served as steam plant for a generator....

The remains of what was probably one of the most prosperous 19th century lead mining sites in the North. The dressing floor can still be traced and alongside runs a very fine series of bouse-steads with traces of rail track above. This series of parallel stepped walls was built to contain the various quantities of ore mined by each group of miners. Here the ore was stored until ready for preparation. Above the bouse-steads stands the present estate wood-shed.
