Winding engine house

A view of the Control Levers of the vertical single-cylinder steam winding engine which was in service at Witton Pit (one of the Sacriston Collieries) from 1860 til 1936. This Crowther-type engine was made by Thomas Murray of Chester le Street in 1936. The enginemen were 3 brothers: Jock, Tom and Bob Laidler. The old engine was replaced by a modern electric clutch winder drawing from the Low Main, Hutton seam and the bottom level (Busty seam) at approximately 600 feet.
