I was not born at the time of the disaster but my parents told me about it. My father was a stretcher bearer bringing out the bodies of the men who lost their lives.

29th May will be a date that will always be remembered in Easington. I hope that those brave men who lost their lives that tragic day in 1951 will be looking down on their families and friends and be proud of the way that their memories have been commemorated. David Boyes

"I am so proud to be part of this community. The displays and information have, sadly, helped me to understand what happened on that awful day. I was five years old at the time. How I miss my lovely dad, Joe Lippeatt. We must never forget what happened.

My thanks to Beamish and all who organised and took part in this heart wrenching day."

(The mines rescur team were) very brave guys, utter unsung hero's. At 66 yrs old now,and retired, I still, and will always, have the utmost respect and admiration for these lads, who risked, and sometimes gave, their own lives, to help save others, and who are still active to this day.

Sad that these disasters had to happen, I had it rough as a young pit lad in the late fifties-on,but I'm thankful I can still tell my stories about my experience, some of those killed in this, and other big disasters like this one, involved young kids, and their fathers, brothers, and Uncles, not forgetting their friends also.....yes,very very sad.

It breaks my heart when I see crippled old miners who suffered so badly just to put food on the table...

The Coal-Owners,and the National Coal Board, have a lot to answer for, when you remember the loss of lives, over the years.....a lot of them could have been prevented,if the money-god hadn't been a contributory factor...
