High Level Bridge
The High Level Bridge (from Gateshead end of bridge) designed by Robert Stephenson and constructed between 1845 and 1849. The five piers are of local sandstone. Piled coffer dams, in which the foundation work was carried out, were left in place to protect the piers. An NER tank engine is passing over the bridge.
