Photograph taken at the time of the bus strike July 27th 1957. The garage staff moved into action with a carefully prepared plan. It was in effect a repetition of that put into operation in the 1947 strike. Nine lorries went into action on a shift system which covered the works starting and finishing times. The first one began operating at 4.30 am and the last one got home at 11.15 pm. In all, some 500 men were 'lifted' each shift. The routes took the drivers to Gateshead and Newcastle Chopwell, Stanley, Kaysburn Road Ends and Langley Park, Flint Hill and Allendale Cottages. Consett Iron Works...

A view of Consett Iron Works as seen from Healeyfield, Castleside. It was taken by a Mr H N Futter of Beechwood Gardens Gateshead during the reconstruction of the works in the early 1920s. It shows the incomplete stacks of the Melting Shop on the site of the old West Shop, new buildings at the Fell Coke Works and the stacks at Templetown. The stack at the Lead Mill at Castleside, and Healeyfield and Castleside Churchyard can also be seen. Philipson Neg No 5482

Boy on bicycle
Alfred Herring, nicknamed "Kipper" on his bicycle. He was born in 1904, the fourth child of a Gateshead cycle builder and retailer. Alfred's father was so pleased at gaining a son (Alfred having three elder sisters) that he built a bicycle especially for him. The Herring family eventually totalled twelve children. The bicycle is now in Beamish Collections. Alfred's bicycle was the envy of all his school friends, they having tricycles or none at all. The bicycle has been stolen twice during its life, but it was so well known in the area that it was returned within a fortnight. The Family lived ...
